I find the native bsd networking stack provides a very robust interface for both ids and ips applications.
Performance enhancements using hardware based systems could take c o t s hardware and bring it into the performance realm of dedicated ids ips engines.
The advantage of software based systems is it  rapid prototype and reprogrammed as new threat types emerge.
Hardware only  based systems will require a longer development cycle.

With a combination of bsds networking stack and hardware chip you could have an amazingly robust package

+1, the community is speaking here. FreeBSD used heavily on network
sensor infrastructure.

I'd put this to *BSD generally but the chances of nvidia lining up
with OpenBSD standards for support seem abysmally slim. Still...
